Spidey uniced
My brother loves Spiderman, the comics, the movies. He even has a whole lot of Spiderman shirts. For his 16th Birthday I decided to make him a Spiderman cake. I found a basic Spiderman head picture and used it as a template. He told me that he wanted the Spiderman water suit. Before this I thought there was only the traditional suit but according to him there are a whole lot of suits.
My mom
This time I got my mom to bake the cake using the same recipe that I always use. She baked it because I had work in the morning so by the time I got home I could start icing it. My mom made it really nice and moist. I like the way she bakes cakes. Most of the time she bakes them better than I do.
Once the cake was cool I put on my usual crumb coat made out of water icing. I found that the water icing mustn’t be too thick otherwise it doesn’t spread on the cake nicely. The icing was a very funny colour. Previously I had made blue iced macaroons, purple cupcake roses, blue for the Spiderman head and black for the outline. I mixed all these colours together and they made a very interesting dark blue. I added sky blue food colouring to make the mixture lighter. It didn’t turn out as light as I planned but it was definitely a different shade of blue.
Spidey iced
A couple of days before I made the cake I iced Spidey’s head. I could not get rice paper so instead I used wax paper. I even put Spray and cook so it won’t stick. I did the outline first which was black. Then I iced the eyes white. Afterwards I filled in all the little squares with a darkish blue. What I learnt is that I should rather use a very thin icing nozzle. I used the thinnest icing nozzle I had but that wasn’t thin enough. I saw someone take the wax paper and pull it gently over the edge of a table. I tried that and it didn’t work. The bottom broke. Eventually I turned Spidey upside down. Put a damp cloth over him and pulled the wax paper slowly off, still breaking him in the process. Putting him on the cake was like a jigsaw puzzle. My mom and I spent quite a bit of time putting him together.
My brother and me
Poor Spidey was skew on the cake. But everyone still loved him. They all commented on how well I did even though I thought I did terrible. It was a huge success and as usual only a few scraps of Spidey were left.
