IPhone cake
I was busy watching a YouTube video on how to make an Iphone cake. I thought that was an awesome idea. The only problem I had was I needed a reason to make one. I was talking to my aunt and she suggested that I make one for my uncle’s birthday. Instead of making an Iphone cake I made an Ipad cake. The reason why I chose the Ipad is because it is bigger. And since I would be making it for his birthday it would feed more people.
Rainbow Cake
I wanted the cake to be colourful. So I made a rainbow cake. I found a recipe for a white cake on allrecipes.com. I used it but I made one mistake. I used white margarine instead of normal margarine. Needless to say the margarine and sugar did not cream nicely. That's the last time I use white margarine to bake. I have now learnt that it's only for making icing. The cake didn't turn out quite right. The top was very sugary. Plus I found the recipe too complicated. I like making simple cakes, I made the cake three different colours; red, purple and silver. I did this because those were the three main colours of the decorating.
Crumb Coat
In every single cake I make I always put a crumb coat. I learnt from my Nana that you must do that or you will get crumbs on your cake and that looks unprofessional. I've seen that most people use the icing that they going to use on the cake to make the crumb coat. I prefer to use a simple water icing. It dries so quickly. And no one knows it's there.
Silver edge and button
Once the crumb coat was dry I started to ice the outside of the cake, basically the edge of the Ipad. I like silver because it is shiny. I cut a piece of paper to fit the screen and pinned it to the cake. I iced around the paper and it made such a neat edge. The button didn't go so well. I tried to make a circle dent in the cake but instead the icing just came off. I had an icing less circle in my cake. I used a square liquorice sweet as the button and iced it. It didn’t turn out the way I planned but at least it sort of looked like a button.
IPad wallpaper
For the wallpaper on the Ipad I made my own design. I had looked at pictures of Ipads and decided that the wallpapers were too complicated to do on a cake. My uncle’s favourite colours are purple and red. I don’t know how to describe the pattern. Almost like a swirl but not quite. I took my original piece of paper and cut the pattern on it. I pinned that to one side of the “screen” and iced the other side purple. To prevent the purple icing mixing with the silver icing I put a border of paper over the silver icing. Next was the red icing. This was more complicated because I couldn’t cover the purple icing with paper or the icing would have stuck to the paper. I had to use a small knife to do the icing but it turned out nice. Thank goodness the red and purple didn’t mix.
Ipad icons
A couple of weeks ago I made the icons for the cake. It was very easy. I used plastic icing and I only chose some of the more simple ones. I made the Facebook, clock, YouTube, Ipod, date, notes, calculator, App store, ITunes, chat, mail and call. I made them over two days. The first day I coloured the plastic icing the colours I wanted. My friend also helped and we had fun doing it together. Then I cut out all the basic shapes. I made the icons 3cm×3cm. I put them in a dish when I had finished and left them overnight to dry out. I didn’t know this but apparently the colour runs if you don’t dry them properly. It was so humid that day I had to put them in the oven to dry. I even put a sign on the oven warning people to not switch on the oven. When they were dry I painted or used a toothpick depending on the thickness I wanted. I mainly used gel food colouring but when I didn’t have those colours I used the powder icing and just added water. I do prefer using the gel because the powdered icing cracked when it dried out.
Finished Ipad cake
I arranged the icons the way the icons are arranged on an Ipad. They looked beautiful and the size was perfect. I had leftover red icing and I used it to write “Happy Birthday Mark” on the cake with a plastic icing bag. I still had icing after that and I made a pattern around the cake on the cake board. While I was doing that the icing bag broke. I was disappointed that it broke but now I know that using grease paper is better.
At the Party
When I arrived with the cake everyone loved it. My uncle thought it was so awesome. He went and got his mini Ipad and put it next to my cake. I was lucky to get a piece because the cake was devoured by everyone. The children only wanted the pieces with the icons on. I loved making it and can’t wait to make my next cake.
