I saw an awesome idea for a chess set cake on YouTube and since my dad loves chess I decided to try it for his birthday. This cake I had to do in two parts because it involved making the chess pieces and then making the actual chess board.
I learnt a lot about chess by doing this cake. First I learnt that there are 16 pieces on each side. You get two colours normally black and white. I found chess set molds at my local baking store and you get the molds in two parts, the pawns and then the rest of the pieces. I also discovered that making two of the molds equals one set of the pieces, which makes it easy for some of us who have no clue about chess.
I started with the dark chocolate. My aunt has a double boiler so I just used that and melted the chocolate. It was easy to melt the chocolate. The only problem is making sure that the water doesn’t boil making the chocolate too hot. I put the chocolate in the molds and in the freezer. Within 10 minutes they were ready.
The next colour was the white. I did the same thing as with the dark chocolate. Except this time I didn’t pinch the chocolate because I don’t like white chocolate. Once all the chocolates were set I glued them together with leftover chocolate.
I loved making the chocolates and next week I will let you know how I made the chess board and put it all together. If you have any questions, comments or ideas on what I can make next please let me know.
